Family Violence Recovery: Making Decisions that Matter!

Family violence and abuse are often under reported and many people do not reach out for help because of:

Friends and family while well-meaning, can make the situation worse as they lose patience and try to force a decision when the person is not ready. They may not understand the dynamics and complexity of the situation and the feelings of love the person has for their partner despite their behaviour.  

The Role of Fear: Identifying Unhealthy Patterns, Cycles & Perspectives

Family Violence involves a systemic pattern of abusive behaviours and is based on power and control that illicit fear in the victim and retaliation from the abuser for noncompliance. Family Violence is different from marital conflict where the couple are equal in power and there is no fear.

The Impact of Domestic & Family Violence

The result of this ongoing cycle of power and fear can have a devastating impact and lead to:

Ending the cycle of violence does not necessarily mean leaving your partner but it does mean making some changes to the relationship.

Even, if you have been out of your relationship for a while and are still being impacted, it might be time to see a counsellor.

It is important that you do not go through this alone and that you have the support of a counsellor who will walk with you to help you sort out the many conflicting emotions and messages going through your head and will not pressure you to make decisions you are not ready for.

You can break this cycle. You do not have to live in fear any longer and you can and deserve to live a life of happiness and health.
